Problems Filing your Claim?

Updated: Mar 30, 2023

Here are some tips to consider before filing an Insurance Roof Claim:

Understand Your Deductible

Deductibles may vary depending on the cause of damage. Find out from your agent or see your policy declaration page.

Depending on your deductible, you may choose to pay the bill without involving your insurance provider. Paying for small repairs won't necessarily result in a loss of money, since you will have to pay your deductible before the insurance company will pay your claim.

Decide whether to file a claim

If the damage estimate to your home or property exceeds your deductible, contact your insurance company immediately.

Additionally, it is a good idea to follow these steps:

Get pictures of the damage as soon as possible

Document the damage to your property or home as soon as possible. Walkthrough your home with a camcorder and take many pictures to paint a complete picture.

Taking all the costs into account

Consider the cost of materials, labor, and the loss of items when valuing the claim.

Prevent further damage, but notify your insurance company first

If you can prevent further damage with temporary repairs by you or a contractor, then you should speak to your insurance company. Do not act without consulting your insurance company! Putting up Roof Tarps is a common protective and temporary repair measure and we can do it for you.

You should be thorough

You should be thorough when describing the damage and the cause, but only stick to facts! You do not need to add your opinion!

Be present when the damage is inspected

Regardless of whether the insurance adjuster visits your home or sends an independent inspector, you may want to be present or have your contractor on hand.

Don't be forced into a settlement

Stay patient, stay firm, and you'll receive the home insurance check you deserve. Let your contractor file supplements (additional requests for funds to cover damaged items not listed on the first check) to ensure you get what you deserve.

Know your rights under your home insurance policy

Review your company's policies and make sure your company does what it is supposed to. Thanks to our in-house claims team, APD Roofing understands insurance policies better than most contractors.

Make sure your claim is properly filed

You will need a claim number, a contact name, and a phone number for your insurance claims adjuster.

Document EVERYTHING

Recording and documenting the process must be done diligently.

Stay on top of the insurance company

Make sure you stay in regular contact with the company through the home insurance claim process.

Don't get pushed around by the company

Do not accept short payment from the company if you believe you are owed compensation for losses you can prove occurred. An insurance settlement can always be contested if you can prove you are owed more damages.

Be Honest

Don't lie on your home insurance claim. Not only will your claim be denied, you may also face legal penalties.
